Dancing in a studio consisted of dancers from all over Maine, most of them were female with the expectation of a few young children. During the fifteen years I danced in that studio, a male teenager joined the dance team. My dance studio was very pleased that he joined, because he is a great dancer and humble person, a great asset to the team. When I was in middle school, and the high school boy joined the dance team, many people from my school all male peers questioned his intentions of being on the dance team.

My peers had a preconceived idea that the dancer had more intentions than just dancing because of the ballerina expectation that they should be female. My peers thought that a boy dancer dancing with all females could only come from sexual intentions and not a passion for dance. These peers had never met the male dancer and did not know his personality or that his passion was strictly about dance. My friends and I spent hours daily at the dance studio, a lot of the time with our male dancer friend.

Fortunately, quite a few of the popular kids are people that lighten up the room around them. Stereotypes are harmful things that hurt people. The person feels worse about themselves and may lose motivation. They may also leave a bad impression on people despite doing nothing to support that assumption. In that case, there is nothing the person can do about it. Sophomore year was a really great year for me. Things were going great in sports and I was starting to build friendships with some guys on my cross-country team.

Up until this point in my life I had always had mostly girl friends. I just always thought it was easier to make friends with girls rather than boys. I taught high school before, but counseling in a high school creates a different dynamic with the students.

I love interaction, relationship with students, counseling and diversity of each day. Working with students and families through the college admissions process is quite rewarding and provides a nice balance to the problems that I handle day to day. I love the positive and proactive spirit of applying to college and the excitement it brings to the student. In my opinion I think that being a bully is worse than being a bystander. One of the most familiar places that stereotypes are used in is high school. High schoolers use stereotypes to socially categorize people into certain groups. Some examples of these groups could be the jocks, nerds, AP students, cheerleaders, emos, athletes or just the regulars. Stereotypes are used by high schoolers and adults in order to reduce as much possible analization of a person.

By assigning them to their designated group people can simply assume that a person has all of the characteristics of a member of a certain group. As simple as this may sound, social categorization can lead to misconceptions being formed about a person and can leave a negative image of this person. Misconceptions on the other hand, are a whole different story. Misconceptions are commonly used to assume characteristics of someone in a group. Examples of misconceptions could be that people who read books are nerds or that football players are dumb.

Misconceptions usually only exist because people lack the knowledge to really investigate and instead misconceive an entire group based on their experiences with only one particular individual that is part of it.
