That Part 2 begins, not chronologically with the Tsimtsum sinking, but with Pi inviting Richard Parker onto the lifeboat, also reflects this, for it represents Pi reaching out for what Richard Parker symbolizes—his own survival instinct.

Throughout Part 2 there are other representative moments of a loss of innocence, besides the symbolic one of bringing Richard Parker onto the lifeboat. The most important of these is the death of the Frenchman, which Pi describes as killing a part of him which has never come back to life. That part can certainly be read as his innocence. If his character had been well written, this might be passable when combined with the stronger parts of Older and Younger Pi.

The character is horrible. The actor is terrible. I am not drawn into his adventure or right of passage. I simply want him to go away so I can enjoy the very well done CGI tiger in his survival story. If the focus had been on the tiger, instead of the detestably stupid Pi, and told from the tiger's perspective or just not have a protagonist that's so terrible that the viewer isn't able to empathize or associate with the movie would have been good. There's just a huge chunk of this movie, most of the teenage Pi runtime, that should have been left on the cutting room floor. If you don't heed my review and do decide to watch: watch the first 45 minutes, this good.

Then, skip from 45 minutes to the 1 hour and 34 minute mark. That's right, this is a 2 hour movie and all of the mid section, most of time that teenage Pi Sharma is onscreen is a complete waste. It's just totally unnecessary. There's a struggle, things are rough, we get it. Any viewer will come up with a better story in their imagination and develop a character that they can associate and empathize with.

Watching teenage Sharma in the terrible teenage Pi role just ruins the point of the story. No joke. Skip an entire 45 minutes of a 2 hour movie and the movie is decent. I would rate it 3. There's a reason why most films are 90 minutes. This one plays like a school child's word essay that that's crammed full of rubbish just to make the work count. Either skip the movie or skip those 45 terrible minutes. For your sanity and so my sacrifice in attempting to sit through it wasn't in vain only the fast forward button allowed me to keep my sanity.

Did I mention skip from 45 minutes, to 1 hour and 34 minutes? Ok, good. I'm just trying to drive the point home because it's a decent movie if you watch it that way. If you watch that middle part you will hate the protagonist and quit watching the movie. Todd M. Reviewed in the United States on December 25, Is a succinct story about survival at sea more plausible than one that may not be so believable… you decide but I suspect there will some discussion about it after the credits start rolling.

Life Of Pi is a story about survival, nature and religion. Nature is not only represented by the tiger but the ocean and all the animals in it which are beautifully presented via plenty of CGI special effects. During his ordeal he asked why God had put him in that situation and then thanked him during the journey. Pat Reviewed in the United States on September 25, The 4K UHD version is stunningly beautiful. I read and loved the book years ago. For some reason I wasn't overly thrilled with the original movie but this version takes the movie to new heights. This movie has it all in terms of what a great movie should be. Great story line, great writing, great acting and true to the book. Its a movie worth owning as I plan on rewatching it with friends and family.
