Raphael Hillyer was an American viola soloist , teacher died from heart failure ,he was Hillyer was still lecturing and teaching viola at Boston University during the final month of his life. Hillyer was a founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet. He was born in to a family with a musical background: his mother was a pianist and his father, a mathematician, also was an amateur violist. At the age of 16 Hillyer attended the Curtis Institute of Music , followed by studies at Dartmouth College , from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a mathematics degree in He then completed graduate work in music under Walter Piston and Hugo Leichtentritt at Harvard University ,where he played frequent recitals with his friend and classmate, Leonard Bernstein.

In , at the urging of Lehner, Hillyer, until then a violinist, prepared for an audition with a new quartet that was in need of a violist. With a borrowed viola and an intensity for which he was becoming well known, Hillyer played the audition and was chosen to be the violist and founding member of what became the Juilliard String Quartet. Hillyer remained with the Juilliard String Quartet for 23 years, recording, teaching and concertizing — championing new music and reinvigorating chamber music.

After retiring from the Juilliard String Quartet in , Hillyer performed frequently as soloist and collaborator with other chamber music groups. He also intensified the work he had grown passionate about: teaching and mentoring young musicians throughout the world. He was a guiding force behind the Tokyo String Quartet for decades. Wade Arlyn Crane grew up in Robbinsville , a small town with a population of located in the western-most part of North Carolina in the Smokey Mountains. He was the youngest of four children. His father was killed in an automobile accident shortly after he was born, which necessitated him being raised by his grandmother. It was here where he initially developed his passion for playing pool.

He did odd jobs, keeping the pool room clean, sweeping floors, and even had a shoe shine stand. The owner would direct the customers to play pool with young Wade if the pool room was empty. Crane was a self-taught pool player. He soon began to enjoy the competitive spirit. In high school, he was a fullback on the football team, the Robbinsville squad, and made it to the state playoffs two years straight. Sometimes, though, his older brother, Bill, would call on Wade to meet him at the local pool hall on Cicero Avenue. Bill would make bad games and find himself overmatched. He would then call on his little brother, Wade, to bail him by having him play the same pool players that he lost to. Thereafter, Bill began to match up Wade with the local players.

It is here where he met his third wife, Linda, who was a waitress at a steak and seafood restaurant. They dated for 18 months before he proposed. It was three and a half years before his wife saw him shoot a game of pool. In , pool became attractive to Crane once more, due to the large money payouts in pocket billiard competitions. Crane returned to the pool scene, but this time, he would be shooting pool in a new environment, competing in short race-type matches on pristine equipment at tournament venues instead of gambling long ahead sets on inferior equipment in various pool rooms around the country.

He was the top money winner of major professional pool tournaments in The final score was 13 to 9. This was the first tournament that a then-unknown Efren Reyes , a pool champion from the Republic of the Philippines , competed in on American soil. At the Steve Gumphreys Memorial 9-Ball Open tournament held in Jackson, Mississippi , Crane defeated Earl Strickland twice in the finals of a double-elimination format event to win the title.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident. It is believed that Crane suffered from an undiagnosed medical condition before the crash. Mary Christine Brockert , better known by her stage name Teena Marie , was an American singer , songwriter and producer died she was , She was known as Tina [1] before taking the stage name Teena Marie; she later acquired the nickname of Lady Tee sometimes spelled Lady T given to her by mentor, collaborator, and friend Rick James. She was known for her distinctive soulful vocals which initially caused many listeners to believe she was African American. She played rhythm guitar , keyboards and congas. She also wrote, produced , sang and arranged virtually all of her songs since her release, Irons in the Fire , which she later said was her favorite album.

Mary Christine, or Tina as she was called, was the fourth of five children born in Santa Monica [ citation needed ] to construction worker Thomas Leslie Brockert and his wife, home renovator Mary Anne. She spent her early childhood in Mission Hills. In , while visiting Louisiana , she had discovered that her paternal ancestors once lived in New Orleans. Reared in a Roman Catholic household, Teena learned to play the piano under the tutelage of two nuns and later taught herself the guitar, bass, and congas.

There, she would acquire a strong spiritual influence from neighborhood matriarch Berthalynn Jackson, an African American who would become her godmother. In , Brockert as lead singer member of a band she assembled which included long time friend Mickey Boyce gained an introduction to Motown Records staff producer Hal Davis best known for his work with Brenda Holloway and the Jackson 5. This led to an audition for a film about orphans being developed by Motown.

The project was shelved, but label boss Berry Gordy decided to sign her as a solo act, impressed with her singing but having no need for a musical group. She recorded unreleased material with a number of different producers over the next few years, before being spotted by labelmate Rick James who was immediately impressed with her sound. Some of the earlier unreleased material has since been made available on compilation. At the time, James, already established as a successful recording artist, was on tap to produce for Diana Ross but changed his mind and decided to work with Brockert. The result was debut album release, Wild and Peaceful.

Neither the album nor its packaging had her picture on it, and many radio programmers incorrectly assumed she was African-American during the earliest months of her career. In , her second album, Lady T , would have her portrait on the cover upon its release. Teena Marie had asked Berry Gordy to contact Rudolph and secure his input as Rick James was unavailable and she felt unprepared to be sole producer of her own material.

Also in , Teena Marie released her third LP, Irons in the Fire , for which she handled all writing and production herself, including the horn and rhythm arrangements of her band and all backing vocals, all considered rare at the time for a female artist. This single also peaked at 28 in the UK chart. In an interview, Teena Marie said she had a fever at the time yet managed to record her vocals in one take. After the session, she was driven to a hospital. In such instances, artists are able to sign and release with another label instead of being held back by an unsupportive one. I just wanted to get away from Motown and have a good life. But it helped a lot of people, like Luther Vandross and the Mary Jane Girls , and a lot of different artists, to be able to get out of their contracts.

In , Teena Marie released her biggest-selling album, Starchild. In , Teena Marie released a rock music -influenced concept album titled Emerald City. It was controversial with her established fan base and not as successful as its predecessors. During her Naked to the World concert tour, she suffered a fall and was hospitalized for six months. She also began work on a new album, titled Black Rain. She was unable to secure a major label deal for this, and did not want to put it out on her own Sarai label in light of the modest sales of Passion Play.

However, a version pressed for promotional purposes was widely bootlegged among fans. After a year sabbatical from the national spotlight, Teena Marie returned to her musical career by signing with the Classics sub-label of the successful hip-hop label, Cash Money Records. Teena Marie quickly followed this success with the release of Sapphire in On September 19, , Teena Marie performed in concert at B. Teena took this time to play a couple of finished tracks from her upcoming album, Congo Square , and she received a positive response from the crowd. She reminds me of me. In , Teena Marie continued to be a headliner on the Las Vegas Strip , appearing regularly at the Las Vegas Hilton and other venues until just before her death. In addition, she was in the midst of her writing her memoir. Teena Marie, who never wed, gave birth to a daughter in , whom she named Alia Rose, [21] who, as of , sang under the name Rose LeBeau.

Lenny Kravitz posted a video in which he revealed that Teena Marie had taken him into her home and helped him when he was struggling early in his career. Around , Teena Marie lay sleeping in a hotel room when a large picture frame fell and struck her in the head. His first presidency was known as the Saudi Venezuela due to its economic and social prosperity thanks to enormous income from petroleum exportation. However, his second period saw a continuation of the economic crisis of the s, and saw a series of social crises, a popular revolt denominated Caracazo and two coup attempts in His childhood was spent between the family home in town, a rambling Spanish colonial-style house, and the coffee haciendas owned by his father and maternal grandfather. He also co-operated with the first labour unions in his region. He temporarily returned to Venezuela secretly in to complete special missions in his fight against the new dictatorial government.

He was imprisoned on various occasions and spent more than two years in jail in total. He served as Minister of Interior and Justice from to [1] and made his mark as a tough minister and canny politician who successfully neutralized small, disruptive and radical right-wing and left-wing insurrections, the latter Cuban-influenced and Cuban-financed, that were being staged around the country. This was an important step in the pacification of the country in the mid to late s, the consolidation of democracy and the integration of radical parties into the political process. During this time, he served as head of the AD in Congress and was elected to the position of Secretary General of AD, a role that was crucial in laying the ground for his presidential ambitions.

During the run up to elections, he visited nearly all the villages and cities of Venezuela by foot and walked more than kilometers. He was elected in December of that year, receiving International events, including the Yom Kippur War of , contributed to the implementation of this vision. His measures to protect the environment and foster sustainable development earned the Earth Care award in , the first time a Latin American leader had received this recognition.

He opposed the Somoza and Augusto Pinochet dictatorships and played a crucial role in the finalizing of the agreement for the transfer of the Panama Canal from American to Panamanian control. His administration was often referred to as Saudi Venezuela for its grandiose and extravagant ambitions. By the elections, there was a sense among many citizens that the influx of petrodollars after had not been properly managed. Agricultural production was stagnant.

The national debt had skyrocketed. And whilst per capita income had increased and prosperity was evident in Caracas and other major cities, the country was also more expensive and a significant minority of Venezuelans were still mired in poverty. He actively participated in the Socialist International , where he served as Vice-President for three consecutive terms, under the presidency of Willy Brandt from West Germany. Heroes is dead, but NBC picks up Batman-like Cape Summer Glau NBC picked up the Batman-esque-sounding The Cape , along with three other series to round out its scripted series orders, and Chuck was officially renewed for a fourth season, the network announced today in a statement. The news is hardly a surprise: The show has been limping along in the ratings for several seasons. After ending its fourth season to terrible ratings, speculation had been going on for months as to whether Heroes would get a shot at one final season, or perhaps even a two-hour movie, to finish up its story.

Given the high cost of the show, the bottom-of-the-barrel ratings and the fact that Heroes hasn't been around to build any buzz, it spelled doom for the series. With regard to its new shows, "the addition of these four inventive series to our new scripted lineup demonstrates a wide spectrum of creative stories," said NBC prime-time entertainment president Angela Bromstad in a statement.

Likewise, Chuck has proven its enduring appeal and we love the new creative direction that Josh and Chris have taken the show. Here's the official description of the series: The Cape is a one-hour drama series starring David Lyons ER as Vince Faraday, an honest cop on a corrupt police force, who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken Palm City, Faraday becomes The Cape his son's favorite comic book superhero—and takes the law into his own hands.

The new shows join several already-announced series, including J. Abrams' Undercovers and the conspiracy thriller The Event. NBC will officially announce its schedule on Monday, May Sargent is doing a production polish as the studio runs with eight legs toward a planned shoot later this year. Word is that Peter Parker will be a year-old high school kid struggling with shifting hormones and an outsider status.

You may have seen some or all of Refn's pictures. He has directed the Pusher series and Bronson and his latest Viking bloodbath Valhalla Rising is making big waves at the moment. In a BBC interview, Refn spoke about how if he was to ever turn his attention to more studio friendly fare, there is only one movie for him After Valhalla Rising I thought the most surprising thing for me would be to go to Los Angeles and do a studio movie. Coming from a movie where I had complete control — I also own the movie — and had complete, kind of like, accessibility around me, and then going to Hollywood and doing a film within the studio, which is very much the opposite, I thought could be a very interesting experience for me.

I guess one of the aims I am having, but at the very early stage, I always wanted to do Wonder Woman as a feature film…Well, I would say that Wonder Woman is probably something that, to me, would be not just a satisfaction, but almost a [catharsis], and I was born to make it. The WW stuff is around Refn's next movie is Drive with Ryan Gosling and brings him a bit closer to what would be considered mainstream. Of course this doesn't mean anything for now, its just wishful thinking. But several directors have recently revealed in interviews that they have certain CBM dream projects and then turned out to be however loosely linked to the films. Samuel Bayer said he woulkd love to direct The Boys and it turned out he was in contention, and more recently Splice director Vinceno Natali spoke about a Swamp Thing film.

Now as Brent's article from yesterday reveled, that movie would appear to be a no go.. Either way, having seen Bronson and the clips for Valhalla , Refn would certainly be an outside of the box choice! But perhaps thats exactly what a film like Wonder Woman needs. Check out the trailer for Valhalla Rising and tell me what you think.. Thanks Comic Book Movie Newly restored, 'Metropolis' is now 'powered by a torrent of narrative energy' Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan has exciting news for fans of "Metropolis," a signature moment in sci-fi film and a true classic of silent-movie era. This is a longer version of his recent Los Angeles Times Calendar article.

Can anything be more satisfying than finding the last missing pieces to a puzzle, the critical elements that make the whole thing make sense at last? Turning the discovery even sweeter is finding those precious pieces after more than 80 years of fruitless searching, which is why the theatrical release of the newly reconstituted "Metropolis" has electrified the early-film world.

As of this past Friday, audiences will be able to see how good it is that what was lost was found, will understand why one grateful expert has said this is "akin to recovering lost books of the Bible. For the first time since its debut in , a two-hour-andminute version of Fritz Lang 's masterwork — a version that includes 25 minutes of previously lost footage — will be generally available. To see the film as the director intended, on the big screen with an original score recorded by a piece orchestra, greatly enhances the reputation of a film already considered one of the icons of the silent era.

Set in a machine-run city of the future where captains of industry live in towers and exploited workers dwell underground, "Metropolis" was the most expensive European film ever made, busting its budget on things like shooting days and a reported 36, extras. Strangelove," among others — "Metropolis" was not loved in its initial release and was severely truncated almost immediately.

Because that 16 mm footage was in bad shape, even restored what we see looks markedly different from the rest of the film, and one of the fascinating things about this new "Metropolis" is that it couldn't be clearer what the restored material is. The restorers found no less than 96 places where trims had been made, and though some cut just a few seconds, others are as long as seven minutes. Bringing back these scenes restores entire subplots, makes characters more comprehensible and, in general, makes the film's story much easier to follow. As conceived by Lang and his co-screenwriter Thea von Harbou , "Metropolis" was a film of huge ambition that took on such big themes as the nature of capital and labor and the ease of mass manipulation, and filtered them through a personal story of a young couple in love.

One day, he catches a glimpse of Maria Brigitte Helm , a kind of prophetess who dreams of someone who can be the heart that mediates between the hands of the workers and the brains of the rulers. Also interested in Maria is the crazed inventor Rotwang Rudolf Klein-Rogge , who has a grudge against Freder's father because of a rivalry over a woman. He decides to graft Maria's face onto a robot he has invented, creating a False Maria who will incite the workers to rise up and destroy the city. One of the things that has to be accepted about "Metropolis" is the exaggerated passions and emotions expressed by the actors. This highly stylized way of performing is not the place to look for naturalism and subtlety, but it was not unusual in its time and in a story like this, it is quite effective.

With its plot fully restored, this spanking-new "Metropolis" stands revealed as a film that is about more than its celebrated science fiction look. It's one of the most propulsive of silent films, powered by a torrent of narrative energy, and once you give yourself up to its turbulent spirit, you too will be swept away. Don't believe it? Look at our list of actors who almost wore tights. Call it Bizarro World if you want, but each of those castings I just mentioned almost came to pass. It just … they came to me at a certain point and … when I do something, I wanna do it right. Cruise, on the other hand, may have made Stark just an asshole. Sorry Tom. The studio may have gotten , if Bill Murray had filled the role, as was a strong possibility for some time.

Murray himself was glowing in his praise of Keaton. You know, there have been a number of Batmen. I like them … I thought Mike Keaton did a great job as Batman. He was said to be writer David S. Gyllenhaal was one of the final eight actors to audition for the part, the others being Canadian Joshua Jackson, fellow Americans Eion Bailey and Billy Crudup, along with European actors Cillian Murphy, Henry Cavill, Hugh Dancy and Christian Bale, who Nolan pushed for and got, despite the actor being a real-life stick figure after appearing in The Machinist. The closest that runner-up Gyllenhaal got to being involved in a Batman movie was having his sister Maggie star in The Dark Knight. Of course, he just missed out there too after Tobey Maguire was able to recover from a back injury just before filming Spider-Man 2.

Leva had even appeared in promotional photos for Cannon , wearing the Spidey suit. Albert Pyun The Sword and the Sorcerer replaced him. Unfortunately, with every subsequent rewrite by other writers, it went from good to bad to terrible. Edward Furlong as Spider-Man You can thank financial issues for denying us the chance to see Eddie Furlong in the red and blue spandex in the mids — not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger as Doctor Octopus. Getting Spider-Man to the big-screen became even more of a tangled web after the collapse of Cannon. The rights ended up at Carolco Pictures, at the bequest of James Cameron, who wanted to write and direct a big blockbuster. In , Carolco followed Cannon into that big studio heaven in the sky and left the Spider-Man movie in development hell.

Cameron managed to jump ship and make Titanic. While Arnie had the dubious honor of playing Mr Freeze in Batman and Robin , Eddie simply went cold and his career faded. Maybe MGM thought it was a poisoned chalice? Freddie Prinze Jr and Jude Law were also believed to be early contenders. Maybe they had reservations about the actor after watching Wonderboys and seeing him in bed with another future superhero, Robert Downey Jr? Tell me again, why are they planning a reboot? Dougray Scott as Wolverine Not far behind the Spider-Man franchise is X-Men , which really paved the way for the superhero genre in the 21st century after Batman and Robin ripped it to shreds at the end of the 20th. Dougray Scott, the Scottish actor, was actually hired to play the Canadian wildman with the super-sideburns when director Bryan Singer was assembling his mutant team for X-Men in Scott was ultimately forced to pull out just as they began filming, due to scheduling conflicts with Mission: Impossible II.

In stepped the multi-talented Jackman, who grabbed the film by the scruff of the neck and got himself a Hollywood career, including his own spin-off film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, much like Dougray Scott, Caviezel was forced to drop out due to a prior engagement — Frequency with Dennis Quaid. The first one, the Richard Donner film, was amazing. As soon as Warner Bros. Kevin Smith Clerks, Dogma was among a number of screenwriters hired by heavyweight producer Jon Peters to try and take Superman to never-before-seen heights from a theatrical perspective. Judging by this interview , Burton was the one left annoyed, and rightly so.

They made a choice. They had this, Superman , and Wild, Wild West , and they opted for that and canned this one. I like to be positive, but I really feel that I wasted a year of my life. Burton, on the other hand, has steered clear of the genre he helped mold with Batman in , settling on a career filming Johnny Depp in bad makeup and crazy wigs. More Superman near-misses… Will Smith as Superman Producer Jon Peters had wanted a black-suited Superman — and giant spiders — when Kevin Smith was writing the script for the mooted reboot in Peters also flirted with the possibility of a black-skinned Clark Kent a couple of years later while still trying to get Superman — any Superman — off the ground, going as far as approaching Will Smith about the role.

In the end, Will Smith was never going to court such a controversial, albeit very interesting, move. Smith eventually went on to play Superman an alcoholic with superhero capabilities in the underwhelming Hancock. Usual suspect Jude Law was also in talks. In the end, McG was spooked himself — not by the dreaded curse but by the flight to Australia , where Warner Bros. Bryan Singer braved the travel, and with him came an adequate actor to fill the big red boots, Brandon Routh.

Directed by Richard Donner, Superman was the first big-budget, big-screen superhero movie and attracted some big names. Evans has had few detractors since he won the coveted role of Rogers, and with good reason. He has that rare ability to seriously act and also buff up big-time, Captain America-style.
